Coronavirus Restrictions — Extension — 16 Jun 2021 at 18:51
The majority of MPs voted to continue a ban on indoor gatherings, with exceptions including for work, education and business premises (including shops), and a ban on outdoor gatherings of over six people, again subject to exceptions, and other restrictions, including on businesses, which was due to expire on 30 June 2021, until 18 July 2021.
The motion supported by a majority of MPs in this vote was:
- That the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Steps and Other Provisions) (England) (Amendment) (No. 2) Regulations 2021 (S.I., 2021, No. 705) dated 15 June 2021, a copy of which was laid before this House on 15 June, be approved.
The regulations pushed-back the expiry of The Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (Steps) (England) Regulations 2021 (S.I. 2021/364) from 30 June 2021 until 18 July 2021. The core element of those regulations set out restrictions applying to "Step 1", "Step 2" and "Step 3" [levels of restriction] and placed all of England into the most restrictive "Step 1". "Step 1" restrictions included bans on people gathering indoors, and on more than six people gathering outside. Exceptions were made including for work, education. There were also restrictions on which businesses could operate, and how.[2][3]
The regulations amended, as well as extended, the "steps" regulations. They added provisions enabling piloting to inform the development of options. They also removed express numerical limits on the number of people who may attend a wedding or civil partnership, a reception for a wedding or civil partnership, or a commemorative event following a person’s death, but still requires precaution to be taken.[2][3]
The regulations also extended the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Wearing of Face Coverings on Public Transport) (England) Regulations 2020, which required the wearing of a face covering on public transport, unless there was a reasonable excuse.
