Control of Negative Election Campaigns by Third Parties — Allowing All UK Residents Over 18 to Vote — Introduction of Voter ID — 5 Apr 2011 at 13:45

The majority of MPs voted against strengthening measures to control negative campaigns by third parties in elections, against allowing all those over 18 and legally resident in the UK to vote, and against introducing a requirement to identify voters.

The text of the rejected motion was:

  • That leave be given to bring in a Bill to improve electoral registration;
  • to introduce identification of voters and other measures to combat electoral fraud;
  • to widen the franchise to allow all those over 18 legally resident in the United Kingdom to vote;
  • to strengthen measures to control negative campaigns by third party groups and websites; and for connected purposes
