School Standards and Framework Bill — End Partial Selection of Pupils — rejected — 24 Mar 1998

The majority No voters rejected an amendment^[1] to the School Standards and Framework Bill. The amendment would have, in the words of Don Foster MP, ended "partial selection [of pupils] where it exists and ensure that there is no opportunity for further extension of partial selection in our schools."^[2] However, it was defeated.

The School Standards and Framework Bill's main aims were to^[3]:

• Limit infant class sizes to a maximum of 30
• Abolish grant-maintained schools
• Allow local communities to vote to abolish grammar schools
• Establish an Admissions Code for schools and set up the Office of Schools Adjudicator to enforce this code
