Transparency of Lobbying, Non-Party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Bill — Clause 37 — Confidentiality and Data Protection Duties of Trade Union Assurer — 11 Sep 2013 at 19:00

The majority of MPs voted against giving an assurer of a trade union a duty of confidentiality to the trade union and its members as well as a duty to abide by the trade union's obligations under the Data Protection Act.

A trade union assurer is an independent officer required to audit the union's membership list.

MPs were considering the Transparency of Lobbying, Non-Party Campaigning and Trade Union Administration Bill^[1]. The amendment rejected in this vote was:

• amendment 107, page 39, line 7, at end add—
• ‘, and
• (c) to have a duty of confidentiality to the trade union and its members; and
• (d) to abide at all times by the trade union’s obligations under the Data Protection Act 1998 to protect the information of members.’.

The above subclauses would have been added to the provision of the Bill setting out the duties of an "assurer" to a trade union.
